Let’s Go Fishing(上)

Dave needed to pack(包装) for Saturday’s

fishing trip. He went into his

hall closet(大厅壁橱), where he had more

than 20 rods(标尺) and reels(卷轴). Nowadays(现今)

he went fishing twice a year at Big Bear,

a huge lake(湖) in southern California about

7,000 feet up in the mountains.

California tries to boost (助力)the

fishing industry(产业) by sponsoring(主办) a

Free Fishing Day twice a year,

once in June and once in September.

That sufficed(足够了) for Dave. He went

mostly(主要) because it was a social

event(社交活动) with a few friends, not so

much to catch fish. Even by itself,

the scenic(风景) drive up a twisty two-lane

road was worth the trip. Not to

mention(提及) the big, beautiful houses

and trees that lined the shore of the lake.

Sara went shopping

Sara Smith, a Pasadena resident(居民),

went shopping. She is 30,

and has lived at 3037 N. Foothill

Street since 1992. Sara has been

married to John for seven years.

They have two children; Bob is five

years old and Nancy is three. Sara

owns a 1995 four-door blue Toyola.

At 9 a.m., Sara got into her car

and drove to Barget, a department

(部门)store a mile(英里) away.

Barget was having a holiday sale.

Sara bought a four-slice toaster for

$29.95 plus tax. The regular price

was $39.95. She paid by check.

On her way home, Sara stopped

at MilkPlus to buy a gallon of nonfat milk.

The milk was $3.50. Sara got 50

cents back in change.

Sara arrived home at 10 a.m. John

and the kids were still sleeping.

She woke them up and then made

a hot and nutritious breakfast for everyone.

Jerry Decided To Buy a Gun

Jerry Baldwin was 30 years old.

He was the manager of a pizza restaurant.

He lived in an apartment about one

mile(英里)north of the restaurant.

He walked to and from work. When it was raining,

he took the bus.

Jerry loved gangster movies. When

a new one came out, he would go

to the theater(戏院) and watch

the new movie three or four times.

Then, when it went to video,

Jerry would buy the video at Barney’s

Video Store. Jerry had a home

collection of over 1,000 gangster

videos. Old ones, new ones, color,

black and white, English, Spanish,

Japanese--he loved them all. He could

tell you the name of the movie,

the director, the stars, and the plot.

Did you say you liked “Pulp Fiction”?

Well, Jerry would rattle off all the

details(细说) of that movie. And

then he would invite you to his

place to watch it some time. He was a nice guy.

Jerry finally decided that he would

like to own a gun, just like the gangsters.

So he saved his money for a couple

of years. Then he went to a gun

store and bought a used .38 caliber(口径)

revolver(旋转者) for $300. While there,

he also bought a couple of boxes

of ammunition(军火). The following Saturday

morning, he went to the gun club to

practice with his new revolver.

He was in the club for only

10 minutes when he accidentally

dropped his pistol. The gun

went off, and the bullet went into Jerry’s right knee.

Jerry now walks with a limp(跛行)

and a cane, just like some gangsters.

The Life-Saving cow

Six consecutive(连续的) days of spring rain had created a

raging(发怒) river running by Nancy Brown’s farm.

As she tried to herd her cows to higher ground,

she slipped and hit her head on a fallen tree trunk.

The fall knocked her out for a moment or two.

When she came to, Lizzie, one of her oldest and

favorite cows, was licking her face. The water was rising.

Nancy got up and began walking slowly with Lizzie.

The water was now waist high. Nancy’s pace(速度)

got slower and slower. Finally, all she could do

was to throw her arm around Lizzie’s neck and try to hang on.

About 20 minutes later, Lizzie managed(处理)

to successfully pull herself and Nancy out of the

raging water and onto a bit of high land, a small island

now in the middle of acres(英亩) of white water.

Even though it was about noon, the sky was so dark

and the rain and lightning so bad that it took

rescuers(救助者) another two hours to discover(发现)

Nancy. A helicopter lowered a paramedic(伞兵军医),

who attached(贴上) Nancy to a life-support(生活支持)

hoist(升起). They raised her into the helicopter

and took her to the school gym, where the Red

Cross had set up an emergency(紧急状态) shelter.

When the flood subsided(下沉) two days later,

Nancy immediately went back to the “island.”

Lizzie was gone. She was one of 19 cows that

Nancy lost. “I owe my life to her,” said Nancy sobbingly(湿透的).

High and Lifted Up(下)

The old leaf didn't follow.
He was blown further
down the block and suddenly
lifted up high into the air.
"Hey," he called out, "the sights
up here.
They are spectacular.
Come and see."
Tommy and the maple
leaf ignored him.
"I see something.
I see the dump."
The old leaf cried out.
"I see smoke.
Come up here. I see fire."
"I see nothing," the
maple leaf said.
Tommy saw the fence
that surrounded
the city dump. He was
happy to be with
his friend. They would have
fun in the dump.
Suddenly, a car pulled up.
It was Tommy's mom.
Mrs. Pennington wasn't
about to let her
little boy run into the
city dump.
"Not so fast," she said getting
out of the car.
"You are not allowed
to play in there.
Don't you see the smoke?"
Tommy watched the
maple leaf blow
against the wall and struggle
to get over.
He ran over to get it but was
unable to reach it.
Mrs. Pennington walked over
and took the leaf.
She put it in her pocket.
"There," she said, "it will be
safe until we get home."
Tommy smiled, ran to the car and got in.
He rolled down the back window and looked
up into the sky. He wondered where the old
leaf had gone. Perhaps one day he would
see what the old leaf had seen - perhaps.

High and Lifted Up(中)

The maple(槭树) leaf blew in front of him. It was
bright red with well-defined(明确定义) veins(静脉).
The sun-light shone through it giving it a brilliance
never before seen by a little boy's eyes.
"Where do you think we are going?" Tommy asked the leaf.
"Does it matter?" the leaf replied. "Have fun. Life is short."
"I beg to differ," an older leaf said suddenly coming
beside them. "The journey may be short, but the end is the beginning."
Tommy pondered this the best a leaf could ponder.
"Where do we end up?"
"If the wind blows you in that direction," the old leaf said,
"you will end up in the city dump."
"I don't want that," Tommy said.
"If you are blown in that direction, you will fly high
into the air and see things that no leaf has seen before."
"Follow me to the city dump," the maple leaf said.
"Most of my friends are there."
The wind blew Tommy and the maple leaf along.
Tommy thought of his choices. He wanted to continue to play.
"Okay," Tommy said, "I will go with you to the dump."
The winds shifted and Tommy and the leaf
were blown in the direction of the city dump.

High and Lifted Up(上)

It was a windy day. The mailman (邮差)barely(仅仅,勉强) made it
to the front door. When the door opened, Mrs. Pennington
said, "hello", but, before she had a real chance to say
"thank you", the mail blew out of the mailman's
hands, into the house and the front door slammed (砰然声,猛然)in
his face. Mrs. Pennington ran to pick up the mail.
"Oh my," she said. Tommy was watching the
shutters open and then shut, open and then shut.
"Mom," he said, "may I go outside?" "Be careful,"
she said. "It's so windy today." Tommy crawled
down from the window-seat and ran to the door.
He opened it with a bang(重击,突然巨响).
The wind blew fiercely(猛烈地,厉害地) and
snatched (抢夺,碎片,一阵)the newly recovered(回升)
mail from Mrs. Pennington's
hands and blew it even further into the house.
"Oh my," she said again. Tommy ran outside and the
door slammed shut. Outside, yellow, gold, and red
leaves were leaping (跳跃)from swaying trees, landing on
the roof, jumping off the roof, and then chasing one
another down the street in tiny whirlwinds
(旋风) of merriment(欢乐).
Tommy watched in fascination(魔力,~迷,魅力 )
"If I was a leaf, I
would fly clear across the world," Tommy thought
and then ran out into the yard (庭院,码)among
the swirl(漩涡,涡状形) of colors.
Mrs. Pennington came to the front porch(门廊). "Tommy, I have
your jacket. Please put it on." However, there was no
Tommy in the front yard. "Tommy?" Tommy was a leaf.
He was blowing down the street(街道)
with the rest of his play-mates.
A maple leaf came close-by, touched him
and moved ahead. Tommy met him shortly,
brushed against him, and moved
further (更远的)ahead. They swirled
around and around, hit cars and poles(极), flew up into the
air and then down again. "This is fun," Tommy thought.
